Events scheduled for Bike to Work Week

May 17, 2004

UW–Madison, where students, faculty and staff outnumber parking spaces nearly five to one, has long encouraged members of the campus community to leave their cars at home and find alternative modes of transportation.

Campus officials are helping students, employees and visitors explore one of those transportation alternatives during Bike to Work Week, May 14-21.

Renee Callaway, coordinator of UW–Madison’s Transportation Demand Management program, says the bicycle is a popular method of travel for hundreds of UW–Madison employees and students. She says that for those people living within five miles of work or school, a bicycle is often the quickest and most efficient way to get to campus.

Callaway and her staff will be hosting a pair of events on campus during the week that will offer tips and encouragement for those interested in biking to campus. Free information, bike route maps, bike lights and free bike adjustments from a Williamson Bicycle Works mechanic will be available.

Registration and information tables will be located at:

  • Library Mall on Tuesday, May 18, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. This event will be followed by a 4p.m. ribbon cutting ceremony at the Red Gym’s Art Bike Rack, located outside 716 Langdon St.

  • UW Hospital (at the corner of Walnut Street and Highland Avenue) on Thursday, May 20, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
