Writing Center at the Multicultural Student Center
The Writing Center and the Multicultural Student Center have teamed up to provide convenient writing instruction for students who use the MSC. Faculty and staff are encouraged to refer students who use the MSC (located in the Red Gym) to make use of this free writing instruction. Instructors are available Mondays from 3-6 p.m., and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Writing Center instructors work with students writing many types of papers in a range of disciplines from literature to engineering, biology to women’s studies, as well as graduate research proposals, application essays, cover letters, honors theses and dissertations. They can help at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to revising and rewriting.

Becoming an Empowering Leader, a three-part series, starts Thursday, Feb. 21. The cost for each session is $90 per participant.

Session 1 — Becoming an Empowering Leader

9 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21.Pyle Center.

This workshop takes an honest look at the challenges facing managers in their quest to empower staff members. Participants are presented with a “road map to empowerment” that integrates principles of facilitating transition, envisioning, coaching, managing teams and organizing projects.

Session 2 — Effective Work Dynamics

9 a.m.- 4 p.m., Thursday, March 14. Pyle Center.

To build an effective work group, leaders need to coach, support and model work dynamics that are positive and motivational. In this workshop, participants focus on elements of effective work dynamics such as: strategies for facilitating quality communication among staff; techniques for identifying and solving problems that might otherwise disrupt the group’s efforts; and strategies for appropriately using meetings as modes of communication, conflict management and problem-solving.

Session 3 — Managing Projects and People

9 a.m.- 4 p.m., Thursday, April 11. Pyle Center.

Today’s leaders need to simultaneously manage a range of people and projects. This workshop focuses on overcoming the challenge of coordinating staff resources in a way that results in efficient and effective outcomes. The workshop covers key leadership transactions; project organization, analysis and evaluation; strategies for team investment in project management; and meeting management.

Travel Opportunity in Munich
The Division of Continuing Studies offers a travel program to Munich, Germany, June 13-27. This program provides an opportunity to plan one’s own experiences in Munich, while enjoying the security and camaraderie afforded by a group experience. The package price of $2,675 for the two weeks includes round-trip airfare Chicago-Munich-Chicago, travel to and from airport to hotel, double room, private bath lodging for 13 nights, daily breakfast, three evening meals, guided tour to Salzburg with dinner and a concert, guided tour to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Castles and Oberammergau, gratuities for baggage handling and group dinners, advance program materials, concert performance options, on-site discussions, on-site coordination of all program- sponsored events, pre-program orientation and aid in meeting study goals.

Watercolor: Basics for Beginners
Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Learn about palette choice and the color wheel.

Developing a Business Plan

A written business plan helps you control your business rather than letting it control you. Discover how to target your market, analyze competitors, and examine your strengths and weaknesses as a business owner. Learn how to set goals and develop financial projections.
