Elvehjem receives prestigious grant

October 4, 2000

The Elvehjem Museum of Art has received a $112,500 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for general operating support.

“This significant support will enable the museum to accomplish projects above and beyond our normal exhibition and education programming,” says Elvehjem Director Russell Panczenko. “Through these activities, the museum will enhance its ability carry out its mission and serve the UW–Madison constituency and the general public.”

The Elvehjem was one of 177 museums that received this award out of 823 applicants.

“The grants provide national recognition for museums that have the highest approval of their peers,” says Beverly Sheppard, acting director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. “Museums use these awards to do what they do best: educate, fascinate, inspire, illuminate, inform, enhance and enrich the lives of millions of visitors each year.”

Museums that qualify for general operating support grants demonstrate outstanding performance in all areas of museum operations. Museum professionals with an average of 13 years of experience evaluate each application.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is a federal agency in Washington, D.C., that fosters leadership, innovation and a lifetime of learning by supporting museums and libraries.
