Elvehjem acquires painting

May 11, 2004

The Elvehjem Museum of Art has acquired an important painting by American Impressionist Theodore Robinson (1852-1896). Entitled “On the Cliff: A Girl Sewing,” this oil painting was painted in June 1887 at Dieppe, France. The woman depicted sitting on hillside is Marie, the object of Robinson’s unrequited affection from 1886 until his untimely death in 1896. The new acquisition is now on view in Brittingham Gallery V. The acquisition was made possible through the generosity of alumna Juli Plant Grainger, who established an Elvehjem endowment fund in 1964 for the purchase of art.
