K-12 education experts present ideas to regents
Two nationally prominent speakers will make special presentations to the UW System Board of Regents Thursday, Nov. 9, in Madison.
Terry Hartle, senior vice president and director of the Division of Government and Public Affairs for the American Council on Education, will speak on “National Perspectives on Higher Education.” Donald Langenberg, chancellor of the University System of Maryland, will speak on “Relationships Between Higher Education and K-12 Education.”
Both presentations, which are open to the public, are scheduled 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in 1820 Van Hise.
Hartle joined ACE in 1993 after serving for six years as education staff director for the U.S. Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources. He directs ACE’s monitoring of congressional committees and government agencies to determine the potential impact of legislative and regulatory actions on colleges and universities.
Langenberg has headed the 13-campus, 112,000-student University System of Maryland since 1990. He previously held posts in higher education and government.
Regents plan forum on trust fund investments
The UW System Board of Regents will hold its annual public forum on UW Trust Fund investments 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in 4151 Grainger.
The forum will include a presentation on trust fund proxy voting guidelines, including a summary of shareholder issues during the past year and the Trust Fund voting record. This will be followed by a one-hour period for public testimony.
All interested persons are welcome to attend and participate. Those who wish to speak are asked to register in advance by contacting the board office, 262-2324. Registration forms will also be available at the forum, and all persons attending will be asked to register. Oral remarks are limited to two minutes. Written testimony is invited and encouraged.
The UW System is responsible for the investment and accounting oversight of three investment pools and more than 1,700 donor accounts. Cisco Systems chair to address economic summit
John P. Morgridge, board chair of Cisco Systems and a graduate of UW–Madison, will be a keynote speaker at the Wisconsin Economic Summit, scheduled for the Midwest Express Center in Milwaukee Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
Morgridge, who will speak on Friday, Dec. 1, will address the future “new economy” challenges and opportunities faced by Wisconsin. He heads a company that has grown in sales from $5 million to more than $1 billion. Cisco is the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet and is the fastest growing company in the history of the computer industry.
Gov. Tommy G. Thompson will help kick off the summit on Wednesday, Nov. 29, with a late afternoon presentation. Thompson will urge Wisconsin to build on its economic successes to adapt to the changing economy of the 21st century.
Summit participants also will hear from Arthur J. Rolnick, senior vice president and director of research for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Additional speakers and panelists will be announced as the summit approaches.
