Distinguished Lecture series announces four speakers

The director of Amnesty International will be the next speaker in this year’s Distinguished Lecture Series, organized by the Wisconsin Union Directorate.

William Schulz will give his talk, “Torture, Terror, Tyranny: The State of Human Rights Today,” Nov. 5, in the Union Theater at 7:30 p.m.

The Distinguished Lecture Series tries to present a diversity of viewpoints from individuals who challenge current ideals and values. The series also is designed as a vital part of UW–Madison’s commitment to out-of- classroom learning.

Other speakers scheduled for the series this academic year are:

• Diresh D’Souza, the author of Illiberal Education, who will give a talk entitled “The End of Racism” on Dec. 1.

• Terri McMillan, author of Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, who will speak on Feb. 2.

• Chai Ling, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her role as committee chief commander in the Tiananmen Square protest, who will speak on “The Road to Freedom: Democracy in China” March 25.

Tickets will be made available a few days before each speaker’s visit. Students, faculty, staff and Union members may pick up one free ticket per person from the Union Theater box office. Remaining tickets become available to the general public a day before each talk. Most lectures are given at 7:30 p.m. in the Union Theater.
