Dickey named chair of UW-Madison Athletic Board
Walter Dickey, a professor in the UW Law School, has been appointed as 2005-06 chair of the university’s Athletic Board.
Dickey, who has served on the faculty since 1976 and on the Athletic Board since 2003, is the faculty director of the school’s Remington Center for Research, Education and Service in Criminal Justice. He also has a long history of working with the justice systems in Wisconsin and other states.
Dickey replaces Bruce Jones, a professor in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
“This is an opportunity to help guide a unit that is well-positioned to continue to serve the needs of student-athletes, staff, fans and alumni,” Dickey says. “I’m looking forward to continuing my working relationship with the Athletic Board and division staff to keep athletics a vital part of our university experience.”
Chancellor John D. Wiley selected Dickey, in consultation with the University Committee.
“Walter has proven himself to be an excellent leader, with the analytical approach necessary to help lead the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics through an increasingly sophisticated athletic landscape,” Wiley says.
The chancellor thanked Jones for his service as board chair.
“We’re very grateful for the leadership and dedication that Bruce Jones has shown in this important and challenging role during the last two years,” Wiley says.
The Athletic Board exercises the authority of the faculty over intercollegiate athletics.
Among other functions, it establishes and implements academic standards for recruitment and participation in intercollegiate athletics, oversees the division’s academic services program and monitors the academic progress of student athletes.
In addition, the board: approves athletic event schedules; initiates personnel recommendations; participates in search and screens for head coaches and senior administrators; sets criteria for the evaluation of division staff, reviews and approves evaluations of head coaches and senior administrators and their contract renewals; sets policy for and approval of uses of facilities; participates actively in the development of departmental budgets; approves prices and policies for tickets; and monitors compliance with all rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten and WCHA.
