Dean of Students finalists to visit

Finalists for the dean of students position will visit campus this month to meet and interview with students, administrators, faculty and staff.

Each finalist will spend two days on campus as part of the final phase of the search and screen process. All will hold sessions to meet with and answer questions from the student body, representatives of the Associated Students of Madison, the Multicultural Student Coalition and other student organizations on the issues of student life, diversity and campus climate.

The student sessions will be held from 4:15 -5:45 p.m. in the Student Multicultural Center of the Red Gym, on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, Aug. 13: Luoluo Hong, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va.
  • Monday, Aug. 19: Ivor Emmanuel, director of the Office of International Student Affairs at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 21: Randi Schneider, is director of University Health Services at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 28: Donald Schutt, Jr., director of the Office of Human Resource Development at UW–Madison.

The sessions are open to all students, but those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by email to rparedes@bascom.wisc.edu or gates@bascom.wisc.edu. Pizza and pop will be served.

The new dean will succeed Alicia Chávez, who left the office in January. Roger Howard, associate dean of students emeritus, has been serving as interim dean. A decision on a new dean is expected early this fall.

The Office of the Dean of Students administers a wide range of programs and services designed to support the university’s 40,000 students. Among the many responsibilities of the position are fostering a healthy and diverse campus climate, advocating for student needs and providing crisis support services.
