Critics to discuss race and politics in music

Dave Marsh, editor of Rock & Rap Confidential, music critic and author, will discuss race and politics in popular music in a presentation Wednesday, March 29, at 4 p.m. in 147 Education, 1000 Bascom Mall.

“Can a White Man Rap the Blues?: Race and Politics in Hip-Hop” is the topics of the lecture sponsored by Afro-American Studies. Marsh is author of “Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story,” “The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made,” and is known for his past writing and criticism for Creem and Rolling Stone magazines.

Marsh will team up with John Floyd, John Floyd, music writer for The Memphis Flyer and author of “Sun Records: An Oral History,” and Craig Werner, Professor of Afro-American Studies, for a panel discussion, “The Hearts of Rock & Soul: Music and Race in Memphis, Detroit and Chicago” Thursday, March 30, at 4 p.m. in the Main Lounge, Chadbourne Residence Hall, 420 N. Park St.
