New steps will soon greet visitors to Lathrop Hall. Construction began last October on the front steps leading into the building and is expected to wrap up in June.

Weather and salt had taken their toll, making the project necessary, says Matt Collins, civil engineer with Capital Planning and Development.
This winter’s lack of snow has been good for construction and also eliminates the concern of a quick spring thaw which could lead to an erosion problem, Collins says.
Limestone from quarries around the state is being used, as well as reuse of most of the existing stone.
In addition to the steps, work includes new lights and metal hand railings and the balusters will be rebuilt. Lathrop Hall, home of the UW Dance Program, is on the National Register of Historic Places so care is being taken to replace and repair but not make significant changes, Collins says.
“This should look pretty nice when we’re done,” Collins says.
