Construction: Campus traffic impacts

Campus and city construction projects have forced numerous traffic detours on and near campus this summer.

The most recent significant change is the reopening of Observatory Drive between North Park Street and Bascom Hall, which happened on Aug. 22, according to Transportation Services. That portion of roadway has been closed to traffic since May 18 for a major underground utility project near the Education Building.

The 80, 84 and 85 campus buses have resumed their standard service a week early.

Lake and Frances streets have been restored to two-way traffic between Johnston Street and University Avenue.

Here is the latest news about additional major projects:

Observatory Drive between Park and Charter streets is open again as of Aug. 24.
Gorham Street from State Street to University Avenue will be down to one lane.
Broom Street will be reduced to one lane of traffic at all times between Gorham Street and Johnson Street. Broom is expected to be fully open by Sept. 11.
Mills Street between University Avenue and Johnson Street has reopened.
Charter Street north of West Dayton Street has reopened.
The west side of Henry Mall is closed to vehicular traffic, pedestrians and bicyclists. The east side of the mall is open southbound for motorists and in both directions for pedestrians.
The eastern portion of the Campus Drive bicycle path is expected to reopen soon, according to Transportation Services. Bicycles are being detoured onto Linden Drive.

Northbound access to the central campus between mid-July and September will be available only via Charter Street.

A new, permanent traffic signal will be installed at Johnson and Brooks streets to address additional traffic at that location.

Changes in the construction detours for campus bus routes 80 and 85 will be in effect until September, according to Transportation Services.
