Conferences keep campus hopping

May 20, 2002

University students have moved out of residence halls for the summer, but the dorms are far from dormant.

The Division of University Housing will host 80 conference groups in residence halls between May 27 and Aug. 24. Each summer, 15,000-20,000 guests stay in campus housing as they attend SOAR, pre-college classes, music/dance camps, athletic camps, educational and research programs on campus.

The conference operation helps recruit new students and expand community outreach by offering on-campus affordable living for the summer for non-credit academic programs.

Many departments on campus partner with housing to coordinate their meal service, special events, meeting space, computer lab usage and accommodations. Full catering services are available to provide for pizza parties, picnics, fishboils, break service, banquets and boxed meals along with a complete menu available in five dining units.

This summer, nine new conference groups are staying within the Residence Halls, including Alpha Chi Sigma, Particle Physics, Classification Society of North America and Distance Teaching and Learning.

Several groups host conferences annually on our campus, such as Badger Girls State, Wisconsin 4-H, Graduate School of Banking and Music Clinics.

If you are interested in conference services for future summers or have questions related to the housing conference program, please contact Sharon Seagren, (608) 262-2545.
