Conference to focus on low-income tax credit program

May 11, 2001 By Helen Capellaro

The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program will be the focus of this year’s Wisconsin Housing Conference May 23-24 at the university.

“New Directions for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program” will feature keynote speakers Barbara Thompson, director of policy and government affairs at the National Council of State Housing Agencies in Washington, D.C., and Shekar Narasimhan, managing director of Prudential Mortgage Capital Company in Vienna, Va.

The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program is the largest federal support program for affordable rental housing production. Since its inception in 1986, the program has resulted in the production of almost 23,000 new or rehabilitated rental units in Wisconsin. The conference will explore changes in the program and implications for many Wisconsin developers, nonprofit sponsors, lenders, equity investors, professionals and renters. Special attention will be paid to conditions and trends in Wisconsin.

The annual conference is held each spring to focus public attention on issues relating to quality housing and neighborhoods in Wisconsin. Conference sponsors are the Wisconsin Division of Housing and Intergovernmental Relations, the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority, and the UW–Madison Center for Urban Land Economics Research.

The conference will be at the Fluno Center for Executive Education, 601 University Ave. Cost: $75 for a full-day program, which includes conference materials, lunch and refreshments. An optional dinner session featuring Thompson is an additional $35. Registration deadline: Monday, May 14. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
