Classified emeritus offered

August 24, 2004

Retiring university classified staff are now eligible to receive emeritus status, a distinction that was previously only available for faculty and academic staff.

The honorary title can be granted to classified staff who have a record of distinguished service to the university, which is the standard applied to academic staff and faculty receiving the honor.

“Keep in mind,” says Mark Walters, director of Classified Human Resources, “that emeritus status is not meant to be granted to all retiring employees. Only those determined to have performed at an exceptional level should be recommended.”

Retiring classified staff seeking the distinction must have completed 10 years of service with the university and be eligible to activate their annuity from the Wisconsin Retirement System.

The procedure for granting emeritus status is outlined in Chapter 20 of the Classified Policies and Procedures (www.ohr.wisc.edu). For more information, contact Classified Human Resources at 262-3233.
