Chancellor Martin statement on ASM endorsement of Madison Initiative
The Associated Students of Madison (ASM) Student Council voted 17–1, with 3 abstentions, on Wednesday, April 22 to endorse and support Chancellor Biddy Martin’s proposal for the Madison Initiative for Undergraduates.
ASM is UW–Madison’s student government. The Madison Initiative proposal will be forwarded to the Board of Regents for action on May 7–8. Martin’s statement on the endorsement follows:
“Over the past month, our remarkable students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents, have engaged in a lively discussion of the Madison Initiative for Undergraduates. Together, we have had wide-ranging and productive exchanges about the quality of the institution, access to courses and need-based financial aid, the future of student services and ways to create a new partnership between our students and donors.
Tonight, I am deeply grateful for the full support of the Associated Students of Madison (ASM) Student Council. We have worked collaboratively to enhance the proposal, ensuring student participation in the process as well as in the oversight of the initiative.
Together, we have developed a proposal that is stronger than ever as it advances to the Board of Regents on May 7–8.
As you know, I am deeply committed to ensuring the quality and affordability of a UW–Madison education and the long-term value of our degree. To members of ASM, I thank you for the effort and commitment that you have demonstrated. I look forward to bringing this proposal to fruition.”
