CCAS names Certain president-elect

The next president of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) will be Phillip R. Certain, dean of the College of Letters and Science at UW–Madison.

The CCAS last week chose Certain its president-elect at its annual conference in Minneapolis. The organization will install Certain as president at the next meeting in November 1999. Certain’s main responsibility as president-elect will be to plan that meeting, to be held in Seattle.

Founded in 1965, the CCAS is a national association of colleges and universities committed to nurturing and sustaining arts and sciences as the leading influences in American higher education.

Certain says the organization is a heterogeneous association of arts and sciences colleges, ranging from community colleges to major public research universities.

“UW-Madison was a founding member of the CCAS, and emeritus L&S dean E. David Cronon also has served as president,” Certain says. “It’s important for institutions such as ours to play a leadership role at the national level.”
