Capitol capsules provides a quick overview of state government activities of interest to UW–Madison employees.

Labor hearing scheduled
The Senate Committee on Labor and Agriculture will meet Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 10 a.m. in 330 Southwest, state Capitol. Included on the agenda are Assembly Bill 7, the storage and handling of anhydrous ammonia, and Senate Bill 48, which creates an optional holiday for state employees to observe the birthday of Cesar E. Chavez.

Development model reviewed
The Assembly Natural Resources Committee meets Wednesday, Feb, 28, at 10 a.m. in room 417 North, state Capitol, to consider development of a model ordinance for traditional neighborhood development. This meeting will fulfill a legislative mandate that directs UW-Extension to develop a model ordinance for a traditional neighborhood and an ordinance for a conservation subdivision.

UW Day is coming March 7
A major celebration of public higher education, “UW Day” will be held Thursday, March 7, at Monona Terrace Convention Center. Gov. Scott McCallum will give remarks at 6:30 p.m. Fifteen UW System institutions, including UW–Madison, plan to present exhibits that include cutting-edge technology, educational partnerships and community involvement. Bill would restrict test use
Rep. Sheldon Wasserman, D-Milwaukee, and Sen. Richard Grobschmidt, D-South Milwaukee, proposee legislation (AB 148) that would prohibit the UW System from requiring student applicants to have taken the high school graduation exam. The measure has been referred to Committee on Colleges and Universities. The UW System regents plan to reexamine the issue as well.

Bennett commended
The state Assembly recently approved a resolution commending former Badger basketball Coach Dick Bennett on his accomplishments.
