Campus visits, interviews set for CIO candidates

May 30, 2007

The schedule for two-day campus visits and interviews has been established for the three finalists in the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s search for a new chief information officer (CIO). All schedules will incorporate opportunities for the campus community and the public to meet and become familiar with the candidates.

In each of the public forums, a Webcast will be made available to campus IP addresses.

Schedules for the visits are as follows:

Ronald D. Kraemer
, deputy CIO and associate director of the UW–Madison Division of Information Technology (DoIT), will hold interviews on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 5-6. On June 5 from 9:15-10:30 a.m., all staff at DoIT will be invited to a presentation and discussion with Kraemer in Room 3139 DoIT.

Kraemer’s public forum will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. on June 6 in room 1106 Mechanical Engineering.

Kathy Pletcher
, associate provost for information services and CIO, UW-Green Bay, will hold interviews on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 12-13. Pletcher’s session with DoIT staff will be held from 9:15-10:30 a.m. on June 12 in Room 3139 DoIT.

Pletcher’s public forum will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. on June 13 at Room 5120 a-b Grainger Hall.

Deanna M. Raineri
, associate dean for technology and information services, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will hold interviews on Thursday and Friday, June 28-29. Raineri’s session with DoIT staff will be held from 9:15-10:30 a.m. on June 28 in Room 3139 DoIT.

Raineri’s public forum will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. on June 29 in Room 5120 a-b Grainger Hall.

The CIO position, which was redefined in 2006 after review by a group of external consultants and university CIOs, will provide campus-wide leadership and strategic direction for technology in the learning, research and administrative environments. The position will also oversee DoIT, the central technology organization on campus, and its 500-plus full-time employees and budget of more than $70 million.

"This is a vital position for the university in helping us move forward on complex and rapidly changing technology issues," says UW–Madison Provost Patrick Farrell. "This position will not only address the daily IT needs of students and staff, but deal with other highly specialized applications and set a course for important new directions. We look forward to getting broad-based campus input on the three finalists and selecting a leader who will bring strong managerial experience and strategic, innovative thinking to the job."

Ken Frazier, director of the University Library System, has been serving as interim CIO since July 2006, following the retirement of former technology leader Anne Stunden. She had served as UW-Madison’s CIO since 2000.
