Campus Parkers Can Expect More Spaces
A significant amount of parking construction on campus this academic year will produce more spaces and improve access to campus, says UW–Madison’s top transportation official.
“The construction will require perhaps more time and patience for people parking their vehicles, but the long-term benefit will be worth the short-term inconvenience,” says Lori Kay, director of transportation services.
Drivers should use additional caution in parking construction areas, Kay says.
Already underway is a 250-space addition to the Southeast Ramp/Lot 46, sometimes called the “Taj Garage.” Final construction work is also progressing on Lot 91, which will add approximately 165 spaces across from the Kohl Center. This project is being expanded into a cooperative effort with Madison Metropolitan School District to bring its adjoining lot up to city code, with each area to be used by respective employees during the day and for special events at other times.
Later in the fall, work is expected to begin on the new Steenbock area ramp/Lot 36, with 358 spaces to be ready by late spring.
Construction will also be occurring on Frances and Murray Streets, on the south side of Dayton Street, in conjunction with the construction of the Kohl Center. Combined with demolition work in the Dayton Street area in mid-September, those parking in Lot 48 may experience some construction-related inconveniences for a short period of time, Kay says. By late spring, Lot 48 will be converted to student recreational space as part of a Kohl Center agreement with the City of Madison.
