Campus offers condolences to Indonesian students

International Student Services (ISS) and the Offices of the Dean of Students are extending condolences to students and campus community members from Indonesia in the wake of the Sept. 30 7.6-magnitude earthquake.

Reports suggest that nearly 1,000 people have died in the quake, with about 300 people seriously injured and the death toll continuing to rise.

UW-Madison also extends its condolences to any students affected by the tsunami in Samoa and American Samoa.

“Our hearts go out to the families and victims impacted by both of these tragedies occurring in the same week,” says Laurie Cox, ISS director.

“The University of Wisconsin–Madison is a university with a global mission and an internationally diverse population,” adds Dean of Students Lori Berquam. “As these tragedies unfold, we express concern for students, alumni, faculty and staff that have ties to the affected regions. We extend our deepest condolences to those who have experienced a loss.”

UW-Madison has approximately 70 Indonesian students on campus.
