Somorjai to give Hilldale Lecture
Gabor A. Somorjai, professor of chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley, will present this year’s Hilldale Lecture for the Physical Sciences Division Tuesday, Oct. 16, 1 p.m., 1800 Engineering.
The lecture’s title is “Surfaces: Favorite Media of Evolution and New Technologies.” The green leaf where photosynthesis occurs and the human body that is full of biopolymer-water interfaces (the skin, the heart, the brain) show the importance of surfaces in evolution. Modern technologies, which include the catalytic converter on automobiles, the microelectronic circuit, and the optical fiber all use surfaces to function. The historical development of surface science will be reviewed.
Health care expert to speak
A nationally recognized expert in the use of research to improve nursing practice will deliver a lecture on the role of nursing in improving health-care quality.
Linda Cronenwett will deliver the second annual Littlefield Lecture Friday, Sept. 28, at 1:30 p.m., G5/119 Clinical Science Center, 600 Highland Ave.
Cronenwett, dean and professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Nursing, will speak on “Improving the Quality of Health Care: How can Nursing Make a Difference?”
