“Bucky for President”

October 5, 2004

Theme for 2004 gives a timely nod to election year

Just when you need a new angle on all the election stories, Bucky Badger has one for you: He’s running for president during Homecoming 2004.

In conjunction with this year’s “Bucky for President” Homecoming theme, the students on the Homecoming Committee have been deputized to register voters.

A voting registration table will be set up at the Wisconsin Alumni Association Campaign Headquarters Hospitality Tent on Friday, Oct. 22. In fact, voter registration will be available at every Homecoming event this year.

A few days before Homecoming kicks off, voting takes center stage with a Rock the Vote event on Library Mall. (See related story.)

New events in 2004 include Bucky’s Inauguration Celebration, with three music venues, including a multicultural dance, taking place on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 8 p.m.-midnight at Memorial Union.

An Educational Assets Forum will feature Chancellor John D. Wiley and UW System President Kevin Reilly on Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 5-7 p.m. at the Kohl Center. A panel discussion on how educational resources are vital to the state’s economy will be followed by a reception. Cost is $10 per person.

The Madison community is invited to take part in events including a pep rally, parade and fireworks display.

The parade begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22. The parade staging area, the 600 block of North Lake Street, and Langdon Street between Lake and Wisconsin Avenue, will be closed from 3-6:30 p.m. Traffic will be restricted in the 700 and 800 blocks of Langdon (between Park and Lake streets) from 3-5 p.m. and closed to traffic from 5-8 p.m.

Candidate Bucky Badger is available for interviews, accompanied — of course — by his UW–Madison student press secretary. His main campaign message? Register and get out to vote Nov. 2!
