Brodd named to lead International Student Services
Judy Brodd has been named director of International Student Services (ISS) at UW–Madison.
A unit of the Dean of Students (DOS) office, ISS is responsible for services and programs designed to assist UW–Madison’s international students, who number more than 3,700. ISS services include orientation programs, immigration document production and advising services, and programming. The office also serves as a campus resource to faculty and staff.
Brodd has served as interim director of ISS since late 2002, when she replaced Sheila Spear, who retired after leading the office since 1994.
“Judy brings a strong commitment to international student services to the DOS division,” says Dean of Students Luoluo Hong. “I look forward to having her continued positive presence on the DOS Management Team and to her campuswide leadership on visa and immigration issues.”
Brodd, who joined ISS in 2001, has also served as associate director. Before coming to Madison, she spent 15 years in the Office of International Studies and Programs at UW-Milwaukee. She has an undergraduate degree in international relations and a master’s degree in urban affairs, both from UWM.
ISS also has primary responsibility for bringing UW–Madison into compliance with the federally mandated Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Brodd says the implementation of the SEVIS is extremely challenging, but adds that ISS is doing its best to implement the system with a minimum of inconvenience to international students.
“International students are an extremely valuable part of our campus community,” she says. “I want to provide them with the best services possible and at the same time promote activities and programs that will allow them to share their unique cultural contributions with the rest of the campus.”
Brodd’s appointment is effective immediately. Her salary is $70,000.
