‘Bring your own condom’ this Valentine’s Day

February 11, 2003

When you’re with your sweetheart this Friday for Valentine’s Day, UW–Madison student organization Sex Out Loud wants to remind you to B.Y.O.C. (bring your own condom) in celebration of National Condom Week.

National Condom Week begins on Feb. 14 and runs until Feb. 21. Events include condom demonstrations in classes, informational tables in Memorial Union, and a Sex Out Loud pleasure program.

In addition, a poster and greeting card campaign will run throughout the week. Students can stop by tables in Memorial Union to color B.Y.O.C. cards for their friends and loved ones. The cards read “Because I respect you” on the front, and have an actual condom on the inside. Posters, also with an actual condom attached, will be hung in bathrooms in bars on and around State Street.

“Sex Out Loud really thinks of UW–Madison’s National Condom Week as being part of a national movement,” said Meredith Schonfeld-Hicks, events coordinator for Sex Out Loud. “This movement is saying, ‘Yes, we can have safer sex, and it can be just as pleasurable, if not more.'”

National Condom Week includes the following events:

  • B.Y.O.C. coloring party in Memorial Union on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. (check TITU). Students are welcome to come help decorate posters.
  • Tables will be set up in Memorial Union from Thursday, Feb. 13 through Thursday, Feb. 20 (10 a.m.-2 p.m.). There, students can color B.Y.O.C. cards (with condoms attached) to give to their friends.
  • Condom demonstrations will be conducted in the first five minutes of class in various classes throughout the week.
  • Sex Out Loud will be doing their “Pleasure Program” on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. in Memorial Union. Please check TITU for the room number. The program will include how to use safer sex supplies in a more pleasurable way.

Sex Out Loud, a UW–Madison student project for sexual health, is the main organizer for this year’s National Condom Week. University Health Services and VOX (Voices for Planned Parenthood) are also co-sponsoring the activities. Visit www.uhs.wisc.edu for more information.
