Biochemistry labs to be dedicated

May 2, 2002

In honor of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and two of its trustees, the Biochemistry Department will dedicate the Russell G. Cleary and Walter A. Frautschi Laboratories Friday, May 3 at 5 p.m.

The labs, located on the fifth floor of the Biochemistry Addition building at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, will house the research of biochemistry professors J. Wesley Pike and Allen Attie. Pike studies the role of vitamin D, sex steroids and other hormones in skeletal biology, as well as in bone-related diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis. Attie investigates the genetics and biochemical mechanisms of type 2 diabetes, a disease affecting 15 million Americans.

The dedication begins at 5 p.m. with a reception in the atrium of the Biochemistry Addition building, 433 Babcock Drive. A ceremony will follow on the fifth floor with presentations by Hector DeLuca, chair of the biochemistry department; Carl Gulbrandsen, director of WARF; and Chancellor John Wiley.

The laboratories honor two WARF trustees who are now deceased. Walter A. Frautschi of Webcrafters, Inc., served as a trustee from 1947-88; Russell G. Cleary, former president of Heileman Brewing Co., served as a trustee from 1985-97.
