Berquam named assistant dean of students
Lori Berquam, assistant residence life director, will move to the Dean of Students office this summer to take the post of assistant dean and chief judicial officer.
As an assistant dean, Berquam will manage the university’s response to student academic and non-academic misconduct issues. She’ll also work with the dean’s office staff to provide ombudsman services and crisis support for UW–Madison students.
Berquam begins her new job Monday, June 24. She replaces Janice Sheppard, who moved last year to an academic planning job in UW System administration.
In University Housing, Berquam has supervised the Lakeshore area dorms since 1995, coming to UW–Madison from UW-Whitewater. She also held housing posts at James Madison University and the University of California-Los Angeles.
She holds an undergraduate degree from Northeast Missouri State University, (now Truman State) and a master’s from UW-La Crosse. She’s currently pursuing her Ph.D. in higher education at UW–Madison.
Berquam says she’s looking forward to dealing with a broader group of students on a wider variety of issues. Most students living in university residence halls are first-year students.
“Lori has the depth of judicial experience that’s essential for a chief judicial officer at this institution,” says Jean Chagnon, associate dean of students. “She also brings organizational development skills that will make her a wonderful advocate for students and a vital member of our leadership team.”
The Dean of Students office is a resource for 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students across all programs, schools, and colleges. Its units offer a broad range of assistance to students and promote a healthy campus climate.
