Berg named UW-Madison interim CIO

University of Wisconsin–Madison Provost Paul M. DeLuca Jr. has appointed Joanne Berg, UW–Madison vice provost of enrollment management, interim chief information officer (CIO).

Berg will manage both positions during the search for a permanent CIO. She begins her dual roles on Aug. 1.

“Joanne has been deeply involved in ITC Campus activities and has taken leadership on a number of broadly important IT issues,” says DeLuca. “She is a superb leader and administrator and enjoys the wide respect of her colleagues throughout campus.”

The UW–Madison CIO shapes information technology strategy and infrastructure for the entire campus, an arm of which is the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), Madison’s central technology organization.

Berg replaces Ron Kraemer, who served as CIO and vice provost for information technology since August 2007. Kraemer was recently named vice president and CIO at Notre Dame University.

John Krogman continues as chief operating officer (COO) of DoIT and associate chief information officer.

“My role will be to continue the excellent work being accomplished on behalf of the university’s IT strategic plan,” says Berg. “I feel confident taking on these duties with the additional support for enrollment management efforts provided by interim registrar Dan Edlebeck; our new director of admissions, Adele Brumfield; Ilene Seltzer as director of the Integrated Student Information System (ISIS); and the ongoing efforts of Susan Fischer in student financial aid.”

Berg was named vice provost for enrollment management in 2004. She has been responsible for Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Student Financial Aid, the Office of the Registrar and ISIS. She leads the effort to provide the foundation for the academic infrastructure that supports the student lifecycle — from prospective student through graduate.
