Badgers’ Rose Bowl run praised on the floor of Congress

The 11-1 season that propelled the Wisconsin Badgers to a berth in the 2011 Rose Bowl won the praise of U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin during a Dec. 17 speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“The Badgers’ success on the field is guided by strong guidance from University of Wisconsin leaders,” Baldwin told her colleagues. To view a video of the speech, click here.

The Wisconsin Democrat commended football coach Bret Bielema, offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, Athletic Director Barry Alvarez, and Chancellor Biddy Martin on this season’s accomplishments.

The Badgers will face the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University in the Jan. 1 bowl game in Pasadena, Calif.

“I know I am joined by fans at home in Wisconsin – and indeed alumni around the country – in feeling great pride in the University of Wisconsin–Madison and this stellar accomplishment,” Baldwin said. “It is true that our football team enjoys very loyal and fervent support. Badger fans sold out Camp Randall Stadium for the entire season.”

Baldwin noted the achievements of several Wisconsin players, including quarterback Scott Tolzien, winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, offensive lineman Gabe Carimi, winner of the Outland Trophy and J.J. Watt, who was chosen to receive the Lott IMPACT Trophy.

“Wisconsin looks forward to badgering the Horned Frogs on New Year’s Day,” Baldwin said.

Baldwin introduced a House resolution (H.Res. 1767) that recognizes the team’s achievements that paved the way to Pasadena. The resolution was passed by the House on a voice vote.

She also said: “Regardless of your political affiliation or football allegiance, there’s always an open invitation from the Wisconsin Badgers to ‘teach you how to Bucky.’”
