Badger Volunteers signup deadline approaches

September 10, 2010 By

The Badger Volunteers program at the Morgridge Center for Public Service will receive honorable-mention recognition from the Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR) and the MSCR Citizens’ Advisory Committee later this month for its commitment to providing after-school volunteers.

There are 10 MSCR program sites in the school district.

The program will be honored at the MSCR’s annual awards celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

Badger Volunteers is a semester-long program that provides UW–Madison students with the training and logistical support they need in order to provide meaningful and consistent service to the Madison community. They work in teams that are organized by student leaders, and they serve community partners on a weekly basis for an entire semester.

The deadline for signing up to become a Badger Volunteer is Tuesday, Sept. 14. All UW–Madison undergraduate students are eligible to take part in the program.

Last year, more than 600 students participated in the program, which offers approximately 48 volunteer opportunities throughout the Madison area. The students go in small groups to the same site at the same time each week and have a leader who takes care of transportation and other logistics.

“This program is great for students who might be intimidated by the idea of going out and volunteering on their own in a new community, and it’s great for community members because they have a set of reliable volunteers who are committed to serving every week,” says program coordinator Megan Miller.
