Artist in residence to perform harp works

Karen Beth Atz, artist in residence at the School of Music and principal harp with the Madison Symphony, performs at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25, in Mills Hall. She will play several different harps and use a number of assisting artists for a broad sampling of repertoire, all written specifically for the harp. Among the works on the program are “Quatre Preludes” by Marcel Tournier, for harp solo; “Encantamiento” by Daniel Catán, with flutist Stephanie Jutt; and “The Flowering Peach,” by Alan Hovhaness, with Les Thimmig, saxophone and clarinet, Tom Ross, timpani and gongs, and Daniel Pingrey (Atz’s son), vibraphone and glockenspiel. Seven students from Atz’s harp studio will perform with her for “Venezolana,” by Alfredo Rolando Ortiz. The balance of the program consists of solo works on concert grand, folk and student-sized harps.
