Altan to play at Union
Altan is a deep and mysterious lake behind Errigal Mountain in Donegal. It is also the name of an Irish traditional band that has had wide impact on audiences and music lovers throughout the world in the last dozen years.
On Saturday, April 13, at 8 p.m., Altan will bring its heartwarming, dynamic live performance to the Wisconsin Union Theater.
With its exquisitely produced award-winning recordings, ranging from the most sensitive and touching old Irish songs to hard-hitting reels and jigs, Altan has moved audiences from Dublin to Tokyo to Seattle and Madison.
Throughout, the band has had an unwavering commitment to bringing the beauty of the traditional music to contemporary audiences. Its musicians have always believed that Irish traditional music is modern in every sense-and the music’s growing influence and popularity have proved them right.
Altan’s commitment to good-natured fun is second only to its commitment to excellence in all things musical. A virtuoso band, it includes founder Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, a Gweedore singer and fiddler who is backed up by a trademark double fiddle and flute combination with guitar, bouzouki and accordion in the mix.
Tickets: $26 general audience, $25 Union members, $12.50 UW–Madison students, Union Box Office, (608) 262-2201.
