Q: I hear a lot about Wisconsin Welcome but I can’t seem to find anything that tells me what the days and dates are. I know there is a lot going on that week. Is there a site where an overall schedule can be found?

A: The end of August brings thousands of new and returning students to the UW–Madison campus. Wisconsin Welcome, sponsored by Orientation and New Student Programs, provides an excellent opportunity for new students to get their questions answered and find their niche on campus. From Aug. 27-Oct. 8, students will meet their peers, learn about college academics, find their way around campus, discover the services and resources provided by UW–Madison and the surrounding community, and learn Badger traditions. You can find a complete list of the exciting Wisconsin Welcome events at http://www.newstudent.wisc.edu/wiwelcome/. It’s sure to be a great program, so pass it on!

Backward Glance
From Wisconsin Week of Aug. 30, 1995: Changes were being made to UW–Madison’s smoke-free campus policy. New measures included making building entrances and exits smoke-free within a 25-foot radius of the doors and designating the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration as a clearinghouse for complaints and other smoking policy matters. … The Daily Cardinal was preparing to resume publication after a hiatus the previous spring due to financial problems. … The Medical School and the School of Education each welcomed new deans. Philip Farrell took over as dean of the Medical School, and W. Charles Read was named dean of the School of Education. … The UW System Board of Regents forwarded a $33 million net budget reduction to the state Joint Committee on Finance, a reduction that was required by the state. The plan included the elimination of 322 full-time equivalent positions; the cuts would be offset by $10.7 million in tuition and application-fee increases.
