Kites on Ice to occupy Lake Mendota, Memorial Union
Madison’s popular mid-winter festival Kites on Ice is moving to Lake Mendota and the Memorial Union for 2004. It will be held Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 7-8.

Organizers moved the festival because of a renovation project taking place this winter at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, the site of Kites on Ice for the past five years.

Personal finance is subject of SoHE banquet keynote
Financial adviser Constance Kilmark will explore emotional and psychological aspects of personal money management in the keynote address at a banquet sponsored by the School of Human Ecology and the Financial Occupations Club for Undergraduate Students on Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Concourse Hotel, 1 W. Dayton St. Kilmark owns Kilmark and Associates in Madison. The banquet, which starts at 5:30 p.m., is being held in conjunction with the school’s yearlong centennial commemoration. Veterinarians laud new associate dean
Bill Gengler, recently named associate dean for clinical affairs and director of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the School of Veterinary Medicine, has received the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association’s “Veterinarian of the Year” award. This award is given annually to a member who has made major contributions to the advancement of the veterinary medical profession. Gengler started as associate dean on Oct. 13.

Executive MBA program rated among world’s best
The Financial Times of London has ranked the UW–Madison Executive MBA program 27th in the world, up from 33rd last year. UW–Madison is ranked 16th among all U.S. programs and first among U.S. schools in percentage of women enrolled.

The rankings appeared in the Oct. 20 Executive MBA section of the international business newspaper. UW–Madison is the only Wisconsin school to make the Financial Times’ top-75 ranking.

This is the third year that the Financial Times has ranked executive MBA programs; Wisconsin’s program has been identified as among the world’s best each year. The UW–Madison program, started in 1993, annually admits 30-35 students.

Men’s basketball ranked 14th
The Wisconsin men’s basketball team is ranked No. 14 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll released Oct. 30. The Badgers are coming off a school-record 24 wins in 2002-03, including the outright Big Ten title and a berth in the 2003 NCAA Tournament “Sweet 16.” Connecticut was ranked No. 1. Wisconsin opens the exhibition season on Saturday, Nov. 8, against the EA Sports All-Stars at the Kohl Center. The first regular-season game is Friday, Nov. 21, at Penn.

From Wisconsin Week, Nov. 5, 1993: The university community recovers from the Camp Randall “stadium crush,” which occurred in the moments after the Badger victory over Michigan on Oct. 30. Chancellor David Ward lauds the courage of students, faculty, staff and rescue workers, who helped prevent the incident from becoming a greater tragedy. “The way you responded during the past week is truly the full measure of the Badger character,” he writes. … Faculty Senate votes to add faculty members to the UW Athletics Board, giving faculty 12 of the 20 votes. The move increases faculty decision-making related to student-athletes. … Cardiologists at UW Hospital and Clinics begin offering a new angioplasty procedure, using an advanced laser to vaporize plaque residing in the coronary arteries.
