Q: Isn’t there a trophy that goes to the winner of the Wisconsin vs. Iowa football games that started a few years ago. What is this trophy and how did it come about?
A: Unveiled Oct. 28, the Big Ten’s newest trophy is the “Heartland.” A bull mounted atop a walnut base measuring 30 inches tall, 36 inches long and 18 inches deep, this trophy was inspired by the spirited and competitive contest that persists annually between Iowa and Wisconsin football teams. Designed by Frank Strub, an artist and former Iowa football player, the trophy was cast in Wisconsin and has all the scores of past games inscribed on it.

As a prize to be claimed by the winner of the Iowa-Wisconsin game annually, this traveling trophy, much like the axe that travels between Wisconsin and Minnesota, currently resides in Iowa.

Q: What exactly is the Freshman Parents’ Weekend?
A: Freshman Parents’ Weekend (FPW), an annual event sponsored by the Wisconsin Alumni Association, is a weekend of educational and fun events for new UW–Madison parents. This year, parents of freshmen will flock to campus on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12. Activities typically include class visits with renowned faculty, tours of campus and community sights, a session with the chancellor (or a designated representative), a pregame breakfast and, of course, a Badger football game. For more information about FPW, contact the Wisconsin Alumni Association at fpw@uwalumni.com or 262-2551.

Nurses Dormitory Memorial dedicated

A brief ceremony was held on Oct. 22 to dedicate the Nurses Dormitory Memorial, located outside the Biotechnology Center addition on what was once the site of the historic building at 1402 University Ave.

The Nursing School Class of 1950 initiated the memorial project, which consists of the architect’s cornerstone from the building and a plaque featuring photographs of life in the dormitory and bearing the words, “Where we became nurses and friends.”
