Advisory: Internet of Things open house

December 5, 2014 By David Tenenbaum

The Internet of Things Lab, a University of Wisconsin–Madison lab that encourages students to explore and develop technology that uses an Internet connection to solve social problems and possibly start a business, will hold an open house Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Discovery Building.

The event will focus on demonstrations and hands-on experience with emerging technologies and devices. Visitors will be able to try out Google Glass, take a virtual roller coaster ride, watch drones fly, and check out an online stolen-bike recovery system.

Other developments on display will include a smart kitchen inventory system, a helmet that can track brain-damaging acceleration, and a system that instantly develops an avatar for the user.

“Students from multiple disciplines across campus have been working in the lab for the semester,” says Sandra Bradley, Internet of Things Lab research director for consumer and retail applications. “They work in teams on projects that they are passionate about, and we buy them equipment and material that they can borrow to pursue their dreams.”

The open house, which is free and open to the public, will be from 5-7 p.m. at the Discovery Building, 330 N. Orchard St. (corner of University Avenue and Orchard Street), Madison.
