Additional security in place for Camp Randall
Tighter security will be in place at Saturday’s University of Wisconsin football game following an announcement from the federal government that the nation is under an orange level alert, which indicates a high risk for terrorist attack.
The game with Northern Illinois University begins at 11:10 a.m. at Camp Randall Stadium.
Under a level orange alert—which was announced Tuesday and is yet to be lifted—the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division calls upon local law enforcement to take additional precautions at all public locations and events when large numbers of people will be present.
UW–Madison Police Chief Sue Riseling is asking fans to be patient and cooperative as police and security personnel follow a series of guidelines that are meant to ensure that the stadium and surrounding area are safe and secure.
First, the Federal Aviation Administration is again banning all aircraft operations within a three nautical mile radius or below 3,000 feet above all major professional or collegiate sporting events, and any other open-air gatherings. This ban includes Camp Randall Stadium.
Also, cars parking in lots 17, 18 and 19, which immediately surround the stadium, may be searched for explosives and weapons. Riseling asks that fans allow extra time getting to the game and that they exercise patience when entering those lots. Stadium gates will open at 9:30 a.m., and fans should also allow some extra time getting into the stadium, as they may have their belongings searched at the gate.
Items that will not be allowed inside the stadium include:
- Coolers
- Thermoses
- Backpacks
- Large bags (including gym bags, duffel bags and totes)
- Luggage
- Umbrellas
- Food and Beverages (except for water on hot days, and any food or beverage needed for medical reasons)
Items that are permitted, but may be searched, include:
- Small purses
- Fanny packs
- Blankets
- Seat cushions
- Oxygen tanks and other medical items
- Hand held radios and televisions
- Small cameras or video cameras
There are no claim checks or storage areas for any of the banned items. Fans will be asked to return the items to their vehicles, of the items may be confiscated.
