Academic Staff Week show uses opportunities to learn, have fun

From art discussions to merengue instructions, events during the School of Education’s Academic Staff Week, Monday, Sept. 27-Friday, Oct. 1, will showcase the diverse talents of academic staff members.

Sessions are open to all UW–Madison faculty and staff.

Many sessions run during the noon hour, and none require registration. The week’s events have been organized by the School of Education Committee on Academic Staff Issues. For a detailed schedule, see: http://www.education.wisc.edu/AcademicStaff/News/

Activities and events

Monday, Sept. 27

  • “How to Keep Exercise a Part of Your Life.” Join a lively discussion and fun short-session workout. Noon-1 p.m., 401 SERF (Rec. Sports “paid access fee” not required).
  • “An Overview of the University and the School of Education.” Dean Charles Read discusses the organization and distinctive qualities of the school. 3:30-4:30 p.m., 154 Education.

Tuesday, Sept. 28

  • “Promotions and Job Security: What Academic Staff Members Should Know.” Learn how to get a promotion and increase job security in this session with Ann Wallace, longtime chair of the Personnel Policies and Procedures Committee of the Academic Staff Assembly. 10:30-11:30 a.m., 154 Education.
  • “Merengue in Minutes.” Gain social dance skills and relieve stress by learning to Merengue. Noon-1 p.m., 549 Lathrop Hall.

Wednesday, Sept. 29

  • “Using Intellectual Property in Today’s Educational Settings: What’s Changed? What Are My Rights?” Lisa Livingston, director of the Instructional Media Development Center, discusses how you can access the intellectual property you need while staying within the copyright law. 3-4 p.m., 218 Educational Sciences.

Thursday, Sept. 30

  • “Fly Fishing the Academic Waters: Stream-Side Lessons from a Professional Journey.” Andrew Winterstein, coordinator of the undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program, discusses the impact of fly angling on his professional life. Casting demonstration included. Noon-1 p.m., Gym 2, Unit II Gymnasium/Natatorium.
  • “Current Directions in Contemporary Art.” Gregg Perkins, lecturer in art, explores 12 artists and artist collectives as he discusses the trend toward “hybrid artistic practice.” 2:30-3:30 p.m., 204 Educational Sciences.

Friday, Oct. 1

  • “Research and Research Services at WCER.” Chris Thorn, WCER researcher and director of technical services, discusses research projects and the opportunities available for staff and students at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. 10:30-11:30 a.m., 253 Educational Sciences.
