A month’s rain: Record for a century

Soggy city homeowners may take solace that the past month’s rain is in fact a record.

Madison’s 30-day rain total ending June 15 has broken all records in the past century, records show. The city received a total of 15.36 inches, which smashed the previous record of 11.75 inches, which fell in June-July of 1950, according to University of Wisconsin–Madison researchers.

Climatological records help to put the matter in perspective:

• The past month’s total exceeded the total precipitation received in the entire year of 1895.
• The total is also three-fourths of the way to the all-time wettest summer season in Madison records.
