Ask Bucky

Do you have questions? We have answers! Ask Bucky is a service provided by the Campus Information and Visitor Center, your one-stop shop for information about the UW–Madison campus and community and your centralized source for off-campus housing listings. For more information, call 263-2400, visit the office in the Red Gym or the new satellite location in Bascom Hall, or visit us at http://www. civc.wisc.edu. Below are two questions Ask Bucky recently received.

Q: I heard that all the recycling in housing and in the unions just gets sent to the trash. Does the university really recycle? Where can I get more information about university recycling?

A: The UW–Madison community is an ardent believer in recycling! UW–Madison’s Environmental Management Division promotes “cultural resource conservation, waste prevention, and landscape preservation.” In fact, the university lists numerous programs that are in place to ensure that the campus is recycling and preserving the environment at http://www2.fpm.wisc.edu/campusecology/. For additional information on campus recycling efforts, contact Daniel Einstein, UW–Madison’s environmental management coordinator, at 265-3417 or deinstein@fpm.wisc.edu.

Q: I’m an alum and am hoping to bring my son (who is almost 4 years old) to the campus to visit. One of the items I’ve been told you now have is a kid-friendly dinosaur exhibit. Can you tell me which building it is in and when it’s open?

A: The Geology Museum is located in Weeks Hall. It contains minerals, rocks and fossils, including a mastodon skeleton from Wisconsin and Wisconsin’s first reconstructed dinosaur skeleton. Features also include meteorites, a fluorescent mineral exhibit, a walk-through model of a Wisconsin limestone cave and a 6-foot-diameter rotating globe. Free, self-guided tours are available from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. For information, visit http://www.geology.wisc.edu/~museum, call 262-1412, or e-mail rich@geology.wisc.edu.

Backward Glance

From Wisconsin Week of Sept. 27, 1995: The newly revealed Campus Master Plan focused on aesthetics, with tree-lined plazas, open-space malls and a Medical School partially located on the west campus as part of the plan.
