Wiley appointed to higher education security board

September 19, 2005 By John Lucas

UW–Madison Chancellor John D. Wiley has been appointed to the National Security Higher Education Advisory Board, a new group designed to give colleges and universities additional input on issues in which academia and national security intersect.

In an announcement of the appointment, FBI Director Robert Mueller says the group has been formed to “serve as a conduit for dialogue between the higher education and the intelligence and law enforcement communities.”

The board is an outgrowth of a June meeting between government officials and university chancellors and presidents. During the session, there was extensive discussion about preserving academia’s culture of openness, academic freedom and international collaboration in the post-9/11 world.

The board is designed to facilitate discussions on issues including international students and scholars, technology, intellectual property export issues and research security.

Wiley says he is honored to be among the university chancellors and presidents selected for the board.

“I hope that my participation in this group will help the academic community build trust with our law enforcement community,” he says. “I strongly believe that the best way to have input on these critical matters is to be actively engaged in the process.”

The group will be chaired by Graham Spanier, president of Penn State University.
