Appointed
Thomas Loftus, a member of several UW advisory boards, was appointed by Gov. Jim Doyle to the Board of Regents, effective through May 1, 2011.
Christopher Semenas, a senior at UW-Parkside, was appointed by Gov. Jim Doyle to the Board of Regents, effective through May 1, 2007. Semenas is the first student regent from UW-Parkside.
Will Ryan, who spent the last two seasons as Wisconsin’s video coordinator for men’s basketball, is the team’s director of basketball operations. He replaces Duffy Conroy, who took an assistant coaching job at UW-Milwaukee.
Chandelle Schulte is the new head softball coach. She led the College of Charleston softball program for the past four years. She succeeds Karen Gallagher, the first coach in UW softball history, who will remain a consultant to the Athletic Department through Sept. 30.
Wayne Tracy was promoted to dispatcher for the Truck Service Operation.
Two psychology professors were elected to the board of directors for the American Psychological Society. Morton Gernsbacher is president-elect, and Patricia Devine was elected as a member of the major professional organization representing academic psychology.
The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters named three UW–Madison professors as Wisconsin Academy Fellows. The 2005 fellows are bioethics professor Alta Charo, art professor Truman Lowe and chemistry professor Bassam Shakhashiri.
Honored
Dave Thomas, professor of animal sciences and a UW-Extension sheep specialist, received the Bouffault International Animal Agriculture Award from the American Society of Animal Science.
Alice Wentworth, research specialist in the Department of Animal Sciences, received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Midwest Poultry Consortium.
The Biochemistry Department presented three awards of $250 on May 18. Dipali Sashital received the Graduate Mentoring Award; David Staple received the Graduate Teaching Excellence Award; and Liana Lamont received the 2005 Sigrid Leirmo Memorial Award in Biochemistry.
The Global Studies program awarded seven Scott Kloeck-Jenson Pre-Dissertation Travel Awards and three Scott Kloeck-Jenson International Internship Awards to graduate students whose work is expected to foster international understanding and social justice. Recipients were Dixie Beadle, theater and drama; Jim Hoesterey, anthropology; Shazia Iftkhar, journalism and mass communication; Eunsook Jung, political science; Chaitanya Lakkimsetti, sociology; Amy Quark, sociology; César Rodríguez-Garavito, sociology; Susan Rottmann, anthropology; Heather Sonntag, languages and cultures of Asia; and Jen Ziemke, political science.
Wisconsin women’s hockey head coach Mark Johnson, a former member of the 1980 “Miracle On Ice” Olympic hockey team, was honored along with the rest of the team at the USA Hockey Annual Congress with the 2005 Distinguished Achievement Award.
UW–Madison will play host to the 2008 Midwest Regional NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey. Dates have not been set, but will fall between March 28 and 30, 2008.

James Donnelly Jr., professor of history, wrote an article that appeared in the 40th volume, summer issue, of Éire-Ireland, an Irish studies journal that Donnelly co-edits.
