Appointed
Howard Moore, a former UW basketball player, returns to Madison as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team. Moore played for the Badgers from 1992-95 and was part of the 1993 NIT team and 1994 NCAA Tournament team.
The Board of Regents appointed six professors to Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation named professorships, which give flexible research support totaling $75,000 for five years. The appointments, effective on July 1, are: Lyn Abramson, Sigmund Freud Professor of Psychology; Keith Busby, Douglas Kelly Professor of Medieval French; b, Ralph F. Hirschmann Professor of Chemistry; Meyer Jackson, Kenneth S. Cole Professor of Physiology; Rudy Koshar, George Mosse Professor of History; John Valley, Charles R. Van Hise Professor of Geology.
Honored
Timothy Baker, professor of psychology and co-director of the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention, will receive the James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award of the American Psychological Society for 2005. The award, to be given later this month, recognizes a lifetime of contributions to applied psychological research.
Jan Steven Greenberg, professor in the School of Social Work, has been awarded the first School of Social Work Faculty Excellence Award for Contributions to Research, Teaching and Service.
Thomas M. Jahns, Grainger Professor of Power Electronics and Electrical Machines, will received the 2005 IEEE Nikola Tesla Award. The award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to generating and utilizing electric power, will be given at a conference later this month.
The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences recognized the following faculty, academic staff and classified staff at an awards ceremony last month:
Larry Chapman, senior scientist in the biological systems engineering department, received the Academic Staff Award for Excellence in Research;
Phil Dunigan, associate director of CALS’ agricultural research stations and CALS vehicle coordinator, received the Academic Staff Award for Excellence in Leadership;
Craig Grau, professor of plant pathology, received the 2005 Spitze Land Grant Faculty Award for Excellence, which recognizes those who exemplify the land grant philosophy;
Ted Halbach, senior outreach specialist in the Department of Dairy Science, received the J. S. Donald Excellence in Teaching Award for the Farm and Industry Short Course;
William Karasov, professor of wildlife ecology, received the Jung Teaching Award, which is given to an outstanding instructor who teaches at least one predominantly undergraduate class;
Ellen Maurer, senior university relations specialist with the College Communications Program, received the Academic Staff Award for Excellence in Service;
David Nelson, professor of biochemistry, received the Arthur J. Maurer Extra Mile Award, which recognizes individuals who provide exceptional service to students beyond their required responsibilities;
Pamela Ruegg, associate professor of dairy science, received the 2005 Pound Extension Award for her efforts to help farmers maximize milk quality;
George Shook, professor of dairy science, received the 2005 Spitzer Teaching Award;
Kent Weigel, assistant professor of dairy science, received the 2005 Pound Research Award for his efforts in helping dairy farmers and the breeding industry capitalize on the potential of genetic improvement;
Milo Wiltbank, professor of dairy science, received the 2005 Wisconsin Agricultural and Life Sciences Alumni Association Advising Award for his role as student advisor and faculty adviser to the Badger Dairy Club.
The following individuals received Classified Staff Recognition Awards:
Judith Barth, department administrator in the Department of Horticulture;
Colleen Clary, program assistant 3 in the Department of Biochemistry;
Chris Koval, farm equipment operator at the West Madison Agricultural Research Station;
Janet Deutsch, information systems resource support technician in the Department of Entomology;
Lucinda “Cindy” Munn, program assistant 2 in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics;
Dianne Raschka, financial specialist in the Department of Animal Sciences.
The General Library System selected a classified and academic staff member to receive its first campus-wide awards for excellence in service. The awards recognize employees who demonstrate exemplary working relationships, high productivity and leadership, and show creativity, initiative and independence. Richard West, senior academic librarian at Wendt Library, received the Classified Staff Service Award; and Lois Milton, senior library services assistant at Central Technical Services, received the Academic Staff Service Award.
Polygon, the engineering student council, has awarded its annual outstanding instructor and teaching assistant awards to the following faculty and teaching assistants, listed by discipline:

University Communications received a silver medal in an annual competition sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, a national organization for university relations professionals. The Badger Fan Initiative, a communitywide campaign created to improve the climate in and around Camp Randall on football game days, was honored in the Individual Special Public Relations and Community Relations Projects category. Also receiving recognition was Jeff Miller, senior photographer in University Communications, who received a silver medal in the Photographer of the Year category. Eric Schueffner, University Communications designer, and Keri Robbins, writer at University Housing, received a CASE V Gold Award for Excellence in Design-Publications Series.
Albert Friedman, associate director of University Communications, was selected by the CASE Board of Trustees as a member of its national Commission on Communications and Marketing.
