Poker Run/Walk slated for April 21

April 4, 2005 By Jonathan Zarov

Now that spring has finally arrived, those looking to awaken their bodies from their winter slumber can ease into exercise at the Ninth Annual Poker Run/Walk.

The Kinesiology Club continues its tradition of making exercise fun and accessible for everyone at the 5-kilometer run/walk, which takes place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 21. Registration for the race, which is open to the public, starts at 4:30 p.m. on race day at the UW–Madison Natatorium, 2000 Observatory Drive.

People of all ability levels are encouraged to join in, get some exercise and try their hand at a game of poker. Each participant draws three cards when they register and the two final cards of their poker hand when they cross the finish line. The grand prize goes to the participant with the highest poker hand, not the fastest time.

“We’re particularly excited about the Poker Run this year because the Lakeshore Path has recently been improved and reopened along the race route,” says Kinesiology Club member Sara Ebel. “Last year, there were detours away from the lake. This year should be gorgeous.”

The entry fee is $5, and proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics and the Kinesiology Club of UW–Madison. Prize drawings and free food are included. The event will take place rain or shine.

The event is co-sponsored by University Health Services. For more information, contact Sara Ebel at (920) 988-6788 or by e-mail at ssebel@wisc.edu.
