‘Science Expeditions’ kicks off a month of campus exploration

March 22, 2005 By Tricia Dickinson

Throughout April, campus becomes a destination for exploration with “Science Expeditions.” The events kick off Saturday, April 2, with demonstrations and hands-on activities geared for the entire family.

Campus visitors can learn firsthand about scientific insights by participating in exhibits and presentations, interacting with world-renowned researchers, and visiting the places where discoveries are made.

Science Expeditions organizers note that the month-long program underscores the university’s tradition of outreach manifested in the Wisconsin Idea, which holds that the boundaries of the university are the boundaries of the state and beyond.

“The university is committed to sharing science with Wisconsin,” says Tom Zinnen, outreach specialist for the Biotechnology Center and co-organizer of Science Expeditions. “This event provides a great opportunity for learners of all ages to come to campus to learn about ground-breaking research, meet the people involved, and experience science as discovery.”

To kick off Science Expeditions, now in its third year, UW–Madison invites the public to campus April 2 to experience science and technology from 1-4 p.m. in the Engineering Centers Building, 1550 Engineering Drive, off of Breese Terrace and University Avenue.

The afternoon of hands-on activities, demonstrations, and insights includes:

  • More than 30 “Exploration Stations” spanning the spectrum of science, including stars, insects, weather, space, bones, DNA, minerals and conservation, all in the atrium of the Engineering Centers Building;
  • “Science is Fun,” with demonstrations at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m in nearby Engineering Hall;
  • “The Wonders of Physics,” with demonstrations at 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., also in Engineering Hall;
  • “The Kiss of Life: In Vitro Fertilization,” with shows at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Engineering Centers Building.

All events on April 2 are free and open to the public. For details, including tips on parking, or other activities offered during the month, call the Campus Information and Visitors Center at (608) 263-2400 or visit the Science Expeditions Web site.
