Professor emeritus honored for excellence in teaching

Donald R. Johnson, professor emeritus of atmospheric and oceanic sciences, has been recognized with a national award for his years of excellence in teaching and mentoring students.

The American Meteorological Society honored Johnson with the 2005 Teaching Excellence Award, given annually to an individual in recognition of sustained outstanding teaching and mentoring of under- graduate or graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic and related sciences.

Johnson began teaching at the UW in 1965; former students include many active and influential members of the atmospheric science community. He also is special projects scientist for the National Weather Service and director of Earth Sciences for the Universities Space Research Association in Columbia, Maryland. He is a fellow of AMS and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The award was presented during the AMS annual meeting in San Diego.
