New tuition policy covers domestic partners, dependents
UW–Madison recently announced up to one year of nonresident tuition remission for domestic partners and their dependents.
The new policy covers an individual who moves to Wisconsin as a result of his or her domestic partner’s full-time employment at UW–Madison, or an individual who is a dependent of someone who moved to Wisconsin as a result of his or her domestic partner’s full-time employment at UW–Madison.
After one year of residence within the state of Wisconsin, and after it is determined that the individual did not move here for educational purposes, the individual would be eligible to apply for in-state tuition under state statute.
In spring 2004, the Faculty Senate Committee on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues released a report identifying the current status of recommendations made by that same committee in 1997. The university enacted the change as a result of the report and subsequent discussion.
“UW-Madison is committed to having a diverse student body, faculty and staff and to serving the needs of all members of the campus community,” says Provost Peter Spear. “This policy change represents an important step toward the university’s goals of improving campus climate and providing equal treatment for all students, faculty and staff.”
Domestic partners of students, faculty and staff are entitled to access all services extended to spouses as allowed by state law and UW System regulations.
