October 19, 2004

Joseph Kauffman, professor emeritus of educational administration and leader of the Kauffman Administrative Development Program at UW–Madison, was recently honored by Rhode Island College, in Providence, RI. The college dedicated a building in honor of Kauffman, who served as its fourth president from 1968-73.

Kauffman was dean of Student Affairs at UW from 1965-68. He returned to Madison to teach in 1973 and went on to become executive vice president of the UW System from 1980-83.

Kauffman’s administration at RIC was characterized by growth in enrollment, new academic programs, an increase in faculty and campus expansion. He also introduced student-exchange and study-abroad programs.

He has written many books on student affairs and administration in higher education and is considered an expert on college presidencies. The Kauffman Administrative Development Program provides instruction and development for faculty and academic staff interested in administrative issues facing UW–Madison.
