Employees ice cream social May 5

April 27, 2004

What’s your favorite Babcock ice cream flavor? Is it orange custard chocolate chip? Chocolate peanut butter? Or the old standby and most popular, vanilla? Those will be just some of the flavors to choose from at the second annual UW–Madison ice cream social. The event, which marks State Employee Recognition Day in Wisconsin, will take place rain or shine on Wednesday, May 5, from 2:30-4 p.m. on upper Bascom Hill. All UW–Madison employees are encouraged to attend.

Many of the university’s top administrators, including deans and directors, will roll up their sleeves and volunteer in shifts to scoop ice cream. Bucky Badger will also make an appearance.

“There are not enough ways to say thank you to the employees who not only make this university work, but help make it great. The ice cream social was one new way to do that,” says School of Veterinary Medicine Dean Daryl Buss, who was among last year’s scoopers. He also took the opportunity to consume some ice cream.

“I found it hard to tell whether the scoopers or the consumers were having the most fun,” he says.

School of Education Dean Charles Read also served up cones last year. “It was great fun wielding a scoop with deans competing to offer their flavors,” he says. “Babcock ice cream on Bascom Hill — it’s hard to be more authentically UW–Madison than that without the marching band.”

The Office of Human Resources is organizing the event this year.
