Conference explores new Latin American left

April 27, 2004 By Barbara Wolff

An international roster of guests from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Uruguay, Venezuela and more will join scholars, students and community members on Thursday-Sunday, April 29-May 2, for an exploration of “The New Latin American Left: Origins and Future Trajectory.”

Victories by leftist presidential candidates in Brazil and Venezuela, the growing strength of the left and accelerated grass- roots social movements in many Latin American countries have prompted many questions. The conference, organized and co-sponsored by the UW–Madison Havens Center, is a rare instance of dialogue among representatives of these emerging leftist movements, parties and governments and American scholars, observers and citizens.

The conference will begin Thursday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Wisconsin Historical Society Auditorium. Sessions on Friday, April 30, will cover Ecuador, Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia and El Salvador. They will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Pres House on Library Mall. On Saturday, May 1, the discussion will turn to Nicaragua, Colombia, Uruguay, Venezuela and Brazil. Panels on May 1 will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Pyle Center. The conference will conclude on Sunday, May 2, at 9:30 a.m. in the Pyle Center.

Reservations are required for the free, public event. Information: http://www.havenscenter.org or info@havenscenter.org.
