Easterday Lane honors former veterinary medicine dean

December 9, 2003

UW–Madison has renamed Creek Lane to honor Bernard Easterday, dean emeritus of the School of Veterinary Medicine. The new Easterday Lane is a block long and connects Observatory and Linden drives. Easterday earned his master’s degree in veterinary science in 1958 and his doctorate in 1961 from the UW. That same year, he joined the UW faculty as an associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Science, a department he chaired from 1968 to 1974. Easterday was asked in 1978 to head up the new veterinary school, which was established in July 1979. He held that position until retiring in 1994. His research interests include the first conclusive demonstration that the swine influenza virus could be naturally transmitted from pigs to human beings.
